On 25th September 2024, the Career Centre, the Chinese Division of the School of Languages, and X-Global at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University successfully hosted a job workshop for international students. Nearly 100 participants gathered at the Foundation Building to explore effective strategies for entering the Chinese job market. Led by Yan Wang from the Career Centre, international students were introduced to key regulations on internships and employment in China, along with essential job search protocols and tips for securing internships and employment.

The workshop provided students with a clear understanding of their legal status and the critical requirements for internships and full-time employment in China. Ms. Wang also offered practical guidance on applying for work permits under current Chinese policies. By the end of the session, students left with a more comprehensive understanding of the regulations governing employment in China.

Attendees were introduced to important job market norms, such as campus recruitment, the Autumn Recruitment Season, and Social Recruitment. The speaker elaborated on each of these norms, helping to boost the students' confidence in their language abilities and job search skills.

The instructor shared various strategies for securing internships in China, including the use of job search websites and networking. She also highlighted the importance of social media platforms, such as WeChat and Xiaohongshu, and following key official accounts. To make the session more engaging, the speaker included several interactive exercises to assist students throughout the workshop.

Students' feedback

"I really appreciated the section on potential websites and platforms for job searches. The speaker offered valuable insights into the job market, which gave me a clearer understanding of where to focus my efforts. And I would highly recommend this workshop to other students, especially those with little to no job experience. It offers a solid foundation for understanding the job hunting process and the intricacies of the market."

"After participating in this workshop, I feel more prepared and confident since I know more on how to find a job in China such as the requirements. I also found the section on learning job norms in China quite useful, as I learned some relevant Chinese terms that I believe will help me in the near future. And I also got a higher edge than others since I know how the hiring system works in China specifically in Suzhou."
