On September 25th, the Chinese Division of the Modern Languages Centre at the Global Cultures and Languages Hub, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University held a Mid-Autumn Festival cultural experience event for international students at both the SIP and Taicang campuses.

Over 40 international students took part in learning about the history and customs of the festival, crafting lanterns, and experiencing traditional Chinese clothing, all in celebration of this festive occasion.

The event began with students learning about the history and traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival. From the legend of Chang'e flying to the moon to the origins of mooncakes, and from the tradition of moon gazing to the significance of family reunions, the participants gained a deeper understanding of this cherished holiday.

Next, the students crafted their own Mid-Autumn lanterns, immersing themselves in the fun and tradition of this festive activity. The process of making lanterns not only paid tribute to the holiday but also allowed the students to feel the warmth and excitement of the celebration.

Hanfu is not just a piece of clothing, but a living history and a cultural symbol in itself. The Hanfu experience photoshoot, specially organised by the teachers, allowed international students to transform the "sights" and "sounds" of Chinese culture into an immersive experience that was both tangible and personal.

Eleonora from Italy shared,?"After studying Chinese for several years, I wanted to deepen my understanding of China and its culture. I think this is a great opportunity."

Charlyssia from Indonesia also said,?"Making a lantern with my own hands was so enjoyable! Wearing Hanfu was a bit challenging, but we laughed and helped each other. In the end, it was such a fun experience. I not only learned more about Chinese Hanfu culture but also made new friends."

The Mid-Autumn experience activity allowed students to fully immerse themselves in the warm atmosphere of reunion. While experiencing the traditions of the festival, they deepened their understanding of and emotional connection to Chinese culture.
