    Modern Languages Centre

    The Modern Languages Centre (MLC) delivers high-quality language instruction and cultural education in Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. Our team of over 50 administrative and teaching professionals employs a student-centred approach enhanced by technology and community-based learning. Our offerings strengthen students’ language proficiency, cultural awareness, and competencies.

    MLC modules are available for students beginning to learn a new language and for degree students in academic programmes including BA International Business with a Language, MA International Business and Global Affairs, BA China Studies, MA China Studies, BA International Relations, and MA International Relations. In addition, students can study MLC modules through the University’s Extended Studies Scheme (ESS), which allows them to study modules outside their enrolled academic programme.

    Chinese Language Teaching

    The Chinese Language Division offers diverse courses taught by 19 dedicated language lecturers. Students develop strong Chinese language skills and gain a deeper understanding of Suzhou’s and China’s unique cultures through tailored teaching materials and methodologies. Extracurricular cultural activities and field trips provide immersive, real-world opportunities to develop students’ communication skills and enhance their learning experience.

    Spanish Language Teaching

    The Spanish Language Division is a dynamic and vibrant team of 20 lecturers dedicated to excellence in Spanish language education and the professional growth of its teaching staff. Serving over 1,000 students annually, the Division offers courses across all proficiency levels covering content topics such as Spanish pop culture, history, and linguistics. Extracurricular workshops enrich the learning experience, exploring themes such as business practices in Spain and Latin America and Spanish music, dance, and food.

    Japanese Language Teaching

    With a dedicated team of 14 lecturers, the Japanese Language Division has significantly increased its student enrolment and course offerings. Through student-centred instruction, learners develop well-rounded Japanese language proficiency through practising reading, writing, listening, and speaking on diverse topics. Additionally, Continuing Support activities provide high-quality learning opportunities outside the classroom.
