Our Year 1 modules, SPA001 and SPA002, are five-credit, semester-long electives designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of Spanish but a strong interest in Hispanic language and culture. These two modules cover the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), providing students with essential linguistic foundations alongside rich cultural insights.
From Year 2 through Year 4, modules SPA003 through SPA008 start at the CEFR-A2 level and advance progressively. Students who complete four years of Spanish can achieve B1 proficiency, particularly within programmes like BA International Business with a Language. The language modules are interactive and engaging, incorporating various cultural themes to enhance both linguistic competence and intercultural understanding.
Content modules?– explore beyond language
Students can complement their Spanish language studies with our optional content modules designed to immerse Year 1 students in the vibrant dimensions of Hispanic culture, history, and linguistics. These 2.5-credit, semester-long modules are also available to students in Year 2 through Year 4 under XJTLU’s Extended Studies Scheme (ESS), which allows students to study modules outside their enrolled academic programmes. These courses delve into topics not typically covered in standard language classes, such as cultural transformations in post-1975 Spain, linguistic insights into Spanish dialects and phonetics, and historical perspectives on the Iberian roots of globalisation. Through project-based tasks, debates, and multimedia analyses, students engage critically with diverse content while exploring its relevance to contemporary contexts. Whether you are broadening your academic studies or simply pursuing your curiosity, these modules offer an enriching academic experience.
