Careers
Graduates from this programme have a wide range of employment options. Civil engineers are responsible for designing and constructing the infrastructure that forms the backbone of modern life, including bridges, roads, high-rise buildings, water systems, and environmental facilities. You will contribute to the development of sustainable and resilient infrastructure, actively addressing challenges such as urbanization and climate change. The programme also offers a strong foundation for further study or a research career with many of our graduates pursuing postgraduate qualifications at some of the world’s top universities.

Overview
The BEng Civil Engineering programme provides a comprehensive academic and industry-oriented learning experience. Civil engineers play a key role in society’s development. They plan, design, construct, and manage infrastructure like buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, ports, harbours, drainage systems, and water treatment plants. The programme’s combination of theory and practice prepares students for successful careers in this dynamic field.
The BEng Civil Engineering programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), a UK-based body of professional engineering institutions: the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Permanent Way Institution. The JBM assesses whether educational programmes meet requirements of the Engineering Council, which regulates the UK’s engineering profession. This accreditation puts BEng Civil Engineering graduates on the fast-track to a globally recognised professional status.
Students in the BEng Civil Engineering programme can choose between two specialised pathways: Civil and Environmental Engineering or Intelligent Architectural Engineering and Management. Each pathway offers distinct learning experiences designed to prepare students for leadership roles in the built environment sector.
Civil and Environmental Engineering: The pathway’s multidisciplinary studies integrate civil and environmental engineering principles. Students gain hands-on experience in designing, building, and managing infrastructure projects that minimise environmental impact and promote sustainability. Through coursework, practical projects, and exposure to innovative engineering solutions, students learn to create resilient, eco-friendly built environments and lead sustainable infrastructure initiatives. Students who study two years at XJTLU and then transfer to the University of Liverpool (2+2 study route) will complete their studies in the University of Liverpool’s Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) programme.
Intelligent Architectural Engineering and Management: This pathway equips students with a strong architectural engineering foundation, blended with creativity and knowledge of modern building technologies. Projects challenge students to design intelligent and sustainable structures, incorporating smart technologies and architectural innovation. Through collaborative design work, problem-solving exercises, and the application of core engineering principles, this pathway prepares students to manage the complexities of modern urban development and create sustainable, aesthetically refined built environments. Students who transfer to the University of Liverpool after their first two years at XJTLU (2+2 study route) will complete their studies in the University of Liverpool’s Architectural Engineering BEng (Hons) programme.
